The Missing Link

Essential to Every Health Transaction

The UNIVERSAL PATIENT INDEX blockchain platform resolves patient identities across health information systems, solving one of the biggest challenges in healthcare information.

The platform’s blockchain log matches Patient IDs across healthcare systems. Patients can index their own health information onto the blockchain log using the FormDrop app to electronically fill out any provider form anywhere. Patients also maintain sovereign control over their indexed health information through personal Digital Health Wallets.

The Universal Patient Index requires no initial participation or implementation by doctors or hospitals to achieve critical mass adoption. Additional products and services help patients take full control of their health information on every level.

The Universal Patient Index is the digital health blockchain platform that resolves patient identity across every aspect of healthcare. It is a self-sovereign index of patient health information distributed across the healthcare industry.

The Universal Patient Index tracks the multiple identities used throughout healthcare to identify patients. These identities are held under the sovereignty of patients and is referenced and correlated through patient’s self-sovereign biotech wallets. These biotech wallets hold keys that undiscoverably associate multiple patient identities. Patients hold sovereignty over the biotech wallets and the keys stored in them. The biotech wallet features keys that can be recovered, revoked and re-issued solely by the patient.

The Universal Patient Index cross-references patient identities across healthcare transactions. Biometrics are indexed on the Universal Patient Index to positively identify patients and proof patient identities.

The Universal Patient Index is the solution for patient identification problems—the root cause of much of what ails healthcare.

PIX - Patient Identity Cross Reference

The Universal Patient Index directly matches Patient IDs across health transactions. It implements the Patient Identity Cross-Reference (PIX) transaction defined by Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise. With it, the sender sends its package using the sender’s Patient ID, and the receiver receives the package with the receivers Patient ID.

In the event that the receiver has not indexed the Patient ID for the subject patient, the Universal Patient Index initiates a Cross-Community Patient Discovery (XCPD) transaction to index the Patient ID of the receiver. After the receiver indexes the Patient ID of the subject patient in response to the XCPD, the receiver will never need to respond to another XCPD associated with the subject patient ever again.

The Universal Patient Index’s self-sovereignty ensures that any and every PIX is transparent and under the sovereignty of the user. Users may block or allow PIX transactions between any party.

Using the PIX, the Universal Patient Index cross-references the identity of the subject patient between the sender and receiver eliminating costly misidentification errors and labor intensive identity matching procedures for both parties to every health transaction.

Biotech Wallets

Patients use self-sovereign biotech wallets to index their biometrics and their multiple health identities on the Universal Patient Index.

Biotech wallets are self-sovereign health identity digital services that hold a patient’s revocable, recoverable and reissuable keys to the Universal Patient Index and host its self-sovereign health record. Biotech wallets can be bound to user DNA for proof of personhood and proof of uniqueness.

High-Demand Patient-Driven Adoption

The Universal Patient Index requires no modification to existing computer systems so its emergence as a platform is not dependent on its adoption by doctors or hospitals. Instead, the Universal Patient Index emerges by achieving a critical mass of actual patient users. This emergence is supported by high demand patient-facing products like FormDrop which utilize the Universal Patient Index to ensure patient privacy and put patients in control of their own health information.

Coin-Operated

The Universal Patient Index is coin-operated. Computing functions of the Universal Patient Index are performed by miners who are solely compensated in Kalibrate Coin.

FormDrop is also coin-operated and accepts Kalibrate Coin.

Self-Sovereign Health Identity

Self-Sovereign Health Identities equip patients to manage their own identities instead of relying on healthcare providers to manage identities for them.

By harnessing the powerful personal computing devices commonplace today, many of the core identity related tasks required by conventional health information systems can be shifted from providers to patients – who are better suited to perform these tasks because they move across networks of care.

All aspects of a Self-Sovereign Health Identity are subject to the will of the patient. Self-Sovereign Health Identities are self-hosted; they can be hosted on the person’s smartphone, they can be hosted by the person’s own server, or they can be hosted by any third-party hosting provider. They can be un-hosted. All at the will of the patient. The degree of protection and security of a Self-Sovereign Health Identity is subject to the will of the person; any degree the person chooses can be employed.

Effective binding of patient identities across health information transactions.

The Universal Patient Index solves the greatest problem in the health information world—the lack of a universal patient identity—by employing blockchain technology to create a patient health information index that efficiently binds patient identities across health information transactions and enterprise boundaries.

Zero tolerance for error or unauthorized intrusion.

Through its undiscoverable association algorithm, the Universal Patient Index  is based on a distributed privacy protocol with zero tolerance for error or unauthorized intrusion by malicious or unauthorized parties. Distributed autonomous computing agents maintain a universal patient health information log, including medical records, lab results, and images, without actually storing that information on the blockchain.

Efficient transfer of health information with improved medical outcomes.

The Universal Patient Index reduces transaction costs and improves medical outcomes by establishing a health information log or index that is accessible both by patients and their authorized healthcare providers, regardless of enterprise and political systems and boundaries.

Interoperability among health information systems.

Through its health identity services and information sharing applications, the Universal Patient Index facilitates interoperability among distributed health information systems, breaking down barriers and walls between existing MPI’s currently used by every healthcare enterprise.

Patient-controlled access to health information.

The Universal Patient Index correlates patient identity with deterministic hierarchical keys stored in an off-blockchain health wallet that can be claimed and fully controlled by patients. It tracks patient health information across distributed health information systems—including where that information is held, who has accessed it, and who has permission to share it.

Incentivized adoption and monetization through health information cryptocurrency.

Implementation of a distributed autonomous network is designed to incentivize adoption of the Universal Patient Index by monetizing digital rights to patient health information. Specifically, Kalibrate Coin cryptocurrency is issued and exchanged incidental to the transfer of health information among patients and providers.

"The problem of tracking a patient's health information throughout their healthcare journey is one of the most significant healthcare problems, and that, when solved, holds the potential for a transformational inflection point for healthcare. This problem remains unsolved. We are here to bring hope."
